On the Road with Nick Delaney - March 2023
There have been lots of trips over the M62 to our Huddersfield HQ already this year as our Senior Management Team continues to plan for the forthcoming year – and years – ahead. As the new year dawned, I also managed to get out and about with trips to London and Cardiff plus the usual journeys around the metropolises of Manchester and Liverpool.
In the background, there has been considerable activity on the legal front, with more clarity around timing of the extension of fixed recoverable costs (postponed for a second time and now due in October), the long-awaited Court of Appeal decision regarding the treatment of mixed injury claims in the Official Injury Claim portal, and changes in the way qualified one-way costs shifting (QOCS) will work. Of course, behind all this, the nation grappled with a series of strikes by public sector workers including nurses and ambulance crews, which was the focus of much media attention.
We have decided to incorporate all these subjects into our next roundtable event at the offices of Civil & Commercial Costs Lawyers in Manchester on Tuesday, 21 March. We are delighted to have Stephen Edwards and Ryan Siner from Robert James Solicitors in attendance. They represented claimants in Rabot v Hassam and Briggs v Laditan, the two mixed injury test cases heard in the Court of Appeal. Given that the Association of British Insurers is now seeking leave to appeal this decision in the Supreme Court, the debate is likely to be lively.
There will also be further updates on the issues surrounding Belsner. There are limited places left for panel members so, if you would like to attend, please register your interest with [email protected] as by the time you read this, I will be on holiday 😊
Finally, we are looking forward to attending and exhibiting at our first conference of the year – The Society of Clinical Injury Lawyers – on Thursday, 4 May in Birmingham. Last year’s event was very well attended with a programme of engaging speakers and was considered a great success. I hope to see you there.
